Scientists can trace much of the activity in your brain as it happens. They can show which regions light up when you see a face, and which networks are active when you daydream. What they cannot yet do is explain why any of that activity comes with an inner experience at all.

That gap has a name. The philosopher David Chalmers called it the hard problem of consciousness, and it has become one of the most discussed open questions in all of science.
