Earth Was Made for You: The Evidence Our Planet Was Designed

Billions of Planets, and One We Know Is Alive

Astronomers have now confirmed thousands of planets orbiting other stars, and statistical studies suggest that most stars have planets of some kind. A generation ago, a reader might have guessed that with so many worlds, life must be everywhere. Instead, the discoveries have given new force to an older and more cautious question: how many of those worlds could support complex life, the kind with animals, minds and cities?

The more scientists learn about what it took to make Earth livable, the longer the list of conditions becomes. A star of the right kind. A distance from it that is neither too hot nor too cold. A large moon. Liquid water. A magnetic field. Moving crustal plates that recycle carbon and keep the climate stable over billions of years. Each of these conditions seems to matter, and scientists are still working out how many of them are truly required.

This article’s thesis is that Earth’s habitability depends on an unusual combination of conditions, that serious scientists have argued complex life may be rare, and that readers of faith can reasonably find in this a reason to feel that our planet is special, as the Bible’s writers sometimes suggest. The word “special” here carries a personal meaning, not a scientific verdict.
